(Noun). No, not the extinct bird (which would have been much more interesting) but a synonym for Dummy (UK) or Pacifier (US). Possibly based on a baby’s first attempt to say ‘Dummy’. Not used much these days I think but very common when I was a very small person. Dummy is the common British term. Pacifier is not used at all in the UK.
